On The Move: Death & Co. team opening LES cocktail lounge Nitecap

Since opening Death & Co. in the East Village in 2006, owners David Kaplan and Alex Day have worked as cocktail consultants, helping other bar owners get their projects up and running. Now, Kaplan and Day are getting ready to debut their latest project, a cocktail lounge called Nitecap, in the basement of Lower East Side restaurant Schapiro’s.

Set to open on March 21st after a liquor license delay, Kaplan describes Nitecap – located at 120 Rivington Street – as a “refuge” during a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal and “a place for all our adored ideas that don’t go to other projects we’re doing.”

But above all, Kaplan and Day admit that they wanted to create a place that they would want to hang out after a shift.

“The beverage program embraces the idea of the last drink of the night,” Kaplan said, “those great, little non-fussy, end-of-the-night things.”

The idea for the collaboration between Kaplan and Day to team up with Schapiro’s proprietors David Shemesh and Eyal Tov began years ago, and is finally becoming a reality. They have also brought on Maison Premiere’s head bartender Natasha David as a cocktail consultant and another partner.

According to Bowery Boogie, Nitecap will serve snack from Schapiro’s but have its own separate entrance.
