Celebrate the Kentucky Derby with these Julep Recipes

 In Features

Break out the big hats and the bourbon – the Kentucky Derby is almost here!

On May 7th, we will be watching as the horses race for the biggest title of the year, and what better way to toast the event than with a $1,000 Mint Julep?

Yes, seriously.

For the past eleven years, Woodford Reserve has created this uber-pricey cocktail to celebrate the biggest day in horse racing, offering just 105 specially made Mint Julep Cups. This year’s Julep was crafted by New York mixologist Julie Renee Williams and is a delicious mix of Woodford Reserve Distiller’s Select, toasted pecan orgeat syrup, fresh mint, edible bronze flakes and caramelized pecan crumbles to garnish.

Woodford Reserve 2016 Kentucky Derby $1,000 Mint Julep Recipe

  • 2 oz. Woodford Reserve Distiller’s Select
  • ¾ oz. toasted pecan orgeat syrup
  • Fresh mint
  • Caramelized pecan crumbles for garnish
  • Edible bronze flakes

Rub fresh mint around julep cup. Combine ingredients with crushed ice and swizzle in glass. Add more crushed ice, garnish with mint bunch, caramelized pecan crumbles and edible bronze flakes. To make toasted pecan orgeat, toast pecans, mix or muddle into small pieces and simmer on low heat to create a nut milk. Fine strain or use a nut milk bag to remove nut pieces, and add equal parts sugar to liquid.
