5 Tips by Le Bernardin’s Aldo Sohm #WineWednesday

Most of the time, “I literally can’t even” when it comes to going out in February but when you get invited to a girls Wine Wednesday private tasting with Aldo Sohm by Jackie Gebel (aka @NoLeftovers_), you say, “Yes, I can!”

To say that Aldo Sohm is a rockstar in the wine world is truly an understatement.  He is Wine Director at Le Bernardin and has won more awards and accolades than seems possible list including “Best Sommelier” honors from competitions in his homeland Austria and everywhere he has set foot since – America, New York, and, yup, the world.  During his time at Le Bernardin, they won a James Beard Award for “Outstanding Wine Service,” and he now helms an adjacent eponymous wine bar.  Aldo also is a winemaker partnering with the famous Austrian sweet winemaker Kracher, to create a dry Gruner Veltliner from the Weinviertel region in Lower Austria.

When we sat down with wine superhero, we were immediately struck by how fun and down to earth he is and how approachable he makes wine seem to us mere mortals.

5 Wine Tips from Aldo Sohm of Le Bernardin

  1. Take care of the glasses – it makes a difference.
  2. More expensive wine is not necessarily better.
  3. The older the wine the better it is. Wine has also a life span.
  4. Don’t be scared to ask – we all started at one point.
  5. Read and study – that’s where you build a foundation!
