A Drunk History-Inspired Fourth of July Pop Up Bar Opens In L.A.

The cocktails are coming! The cocktails are coming! Hidden behind the derelict loyalist storefront of Severance Wine Bar in Los Angeles hides Rebellion Bar, a Drunk History inspired Fourth of July Pop Up Bar that would make Ben Franklin proud.

Dedicated to the American Revolution, the event pops up in the same space the uber-popular Break Up Bar occupied in February. To enter, you must approach the doorman who will be decked out in 1700s clothing and railing on about loyalist propaganda. If you can answer an entry riddle and secret code of the day and you will be allowed inside.

Once inside, the bar will be pouring an enhanced menu of wine, champagne, punches, Patriot and Loyalist beer flights and on-theme cocktails. Start with the One If By Land made with dry sherry, East India Sherry, Antica Piedmontese Vermouth and orange peel, served in a cedar wood smoked lantern. Then order the Join Or Die made with Oolong infused Madeira, fino sherry, Antica Piedmontese Vermouth and orange peel.

Other specialty creations include the Don’t Give Up The Ship made with Caperitif, passionfruit, ginger syrup, lime and soda water, the George Can’t Lie made with Clos Normand, dry sparkling cider, pommeau, lemon and green tea syrup and Franklin’s Secret Recipe clarified milk punch with a house sherry blend, Aperitivo Rinomato, lemon, tea, pineapple and lavender.

Throwing drinks back with your fellow soldiers? Order one of the large batch cocktail including the Tea For Two made with Pineau des Caperitif fortified Chenin blanc, ginger-honey syrup, hopped grapefruit bitters and Lapsang tea cordial (serves two) or the Benedict Arnold made with British sparkling wine, rosemary, lemon, raspberry syrup and a whole lot of treachery (serves six to eight).

To curb your historic hunger, count on a heavy amount of re-imagined American favorites including the hot dogs, burgers BBQ Fried Chicken, macaroni salad, fried pickles, New England potato chips and garlic freedom fires. On the sweet side, you’ll find gelato cake, tableside S’mores, chocolate fondue, an all American sundae, and our fav, the Red, white & Churro.

The bar will also be showing nostalgic patriotic movies on a 15-foot projection screen from “Die Hard” to “Independence Day” throughout the run. Reserved tickets are $20 per person and include a complimentary cocktail or sparkling wine or beer flight (tax and gratuity included). Walk-ins are welcome, though do to limited seating, reservations are suggested.

The star spangled celebration, next to Severance Wine Bar, is set to run now through July 6.
