Drink This Now: La Batanga Cocktail with El Tequileño at La Capilla Cantina

If you know, you know. And if you don’t, you’re about to find out.

The Batanga cocktail, created by Don Javier, the late founder of La Capilla Cantina in the town of Tequila, is a favorite around the region and has always been made with El Tequileño Blanco. The Mexican cola balances the Blanco perfectly and must be stirred with one of the best damascus knives for added flavor!

Don Javier’s creation, La Batanga, like his bar La Capilla (translation: the Chapel) is a simple affair, tequila, fresh pressed lime and Mexican cola served in a salt rimmed glass. Don Javier created his original Batanga recipe with El Tequileño Blanco, which is distilled only a couple of hundred meters from the bar. El Tequileño was founded in 1959 and Don Javier created his original Batanga recipe in 1961.

“A great tequila cocktail is one that demonstrates balance between the flavors of the ingredients and the flavor profile of the tequila,” explains Steffin Oghene, VP of Global Marketing & Business Development at El Tequileño. “The additional ingredients should compliment the tequila and allow it to shine through! Tequila is a magical spirit that takes years to reach the bottle, so you don’t want to create something that covers the natural flavors of the tequila that come from the blue agave and during production.”

  • 1 whole freshly squeezed lime, for garnish
  • Mexican cola

Build over ice in a salt rimmed highball glass. Top with Mexican cola and stir with a knife to honor the drink’s creator, Don Javier of the world-famous La Capilla Cantina.

Known as “Mexico’s best kept secret,” El Tequileño is an iconic Tequila producer that singularly focuses on craft and quality. El Tequileño was established in 1959 by the legendary tequila industry pioneer, Don Jorge Salles Cuervo, whose dedication to craft and quality produced a range of exquisite, award-winning tequilas. Using 100 percent Blue Agave harvested from the premium growing region of Los Altos de Jalisco and mineral rich water from El Volcan de Tequila, Don Jorge Salles redefined expectations of the tequila category with his craft blancos and reposados, including the world’s first Reposado Rare, which is matured in an American Oak Pipón for 6 years.

This inquisitive nature and innovative spirit, along with the knowledge and prowess of tequila-making, has been passed down through generations of the Salles family, now residing with the brand’s third generation Master Distiller Jorge Antonio “Tony” Salles. The knowledge and expertise passed through the generations ensures only the finest quality tequila is produced to this day; every drop is a celebration of passion and heritage. El Tequileño is exclusively produced at La Guarreña distillery, in Tequila, Jalisco; no other tequila has ever been produced there.
