We are huge fans of rum, all kinds of rum and all the rum cocktails. And we have been so excited to finally get to taste Equiano Rum, the first Afro-Caribbean rum which is a Black owned brand led by Ian Burrell, aka The Rum Ambassador. As we are huge rum fans, huge fans of Ian Burrell, we wanted a cocktail by someone else whom we are huge fans of. And we are huge fans of Atlanta’s Thandi Walton.
Her cocktail, the Soweto Blues, is inspired by Zenzile Miriam Makeba AKA Mama Africa who had been exiled from South Africa. Thandi explains, “My inspiration was her strength, resilience, courage and never forgetting her roots even when in exile. She continuously grew her brand and stayed humble. The darkness of the cocktail atop (Angostura) reflects her dark days away from her loved ones and her place of birth. Then the bright days, able to return home (SA), life and her growth in her career!”
