Escape the cold without leaving NYC with these Tropical Bars

With temperatures dropping to the teens and the promise of snowstorms, now is the time to escape freezing cold NYC for the warmth and sunshine of the islands. But if you can’t leave the city, at least these bars and lounges have a tropical feel to help shivering Manhattanites thaw out – at least for a little while.

Mother of Pearl

Mother of Pearl Cocktails

Mother of Pearl opened in the East Village and they probably have the best tiki cocktails in New York City. Mother of Pearl was opened by Ravi DeRossi of Death & Co. Their also serve vegan cocktails if you are looking to try and stay healthy.

Otto’s Shrunken Head

Otto's Shrunken Head Bar nyc

More kitsch then class, Otto’s Shrunken Head invokes a Hawaiian-esque vibe, decked out in island-themed paintings and postcards, and offering island-style cocktails like the Mai Tai, Zombie or a Frozen Banana Pina Colada all served in speciality tiki mugs – which guests can purchase as a novelty souvenir. The crowd is mostly East Village locals (think piercings and tattoos) and the $3 to $6 beers make Otto’s an obvious hangout.

Réunion Surf Bar

Reunion Surf Bar NYC
In recent years, Hell’s Kitchen has become a hangout for residents and the happy hour set alike. And they now have the psuedo-tiki spot Réunion to grab the signature tequila-spiked frozen Corona-slushy or a Mai Tai. Named for a French-owned island off the coast of Madagascar, the beach-themed Réunion staffers are clad in board shorts and skull caps while the walls are adorned with surf boards and vintage beach signs (think Montauk and Malibu). Guests looking got something more than cocktails will be treated to some delicious dishes including short rib sliders, banana leaf-steamed mahi mahi and the Le Americain, a signature dish made with a scooped out baguette filled with Chinese meatballs, French fries, carmelized onion and Gruyere. Thankfully, swimsuit season is still months away.

Zombie Hut

Zombie Hut Tiki Bar NYC

With walls covered in bamboo and decorated with Polynesian masks, the Zombie Hut in Carroll Gardens will offer a tropical respite from the cold winter nights. The $8 Gilligans – vodka, three rums and OJ – will warm you up. Looking for something stronger to warm your bones? Go for the $26 Scorpion Bowl which serves four and will make you forget about the freezing temperature outside. There is also a solid selection of beer and the upbeat music ranges from Jay Z to Journey.
