If you are looking for a place to sip creative cocktails on the Lower East Side, check out The John Lamb, which recently opened up in the basement of the new Sago Hotel. Named for John Lamb, an American soldier, politician, and Anti-Federalist organizer during the American Revolutionary War, this spot features cocktails by Mike Belasco (also behind the stick at The Grey Lady and formerly from Upper East Side watering hole The Gilroy) and has a fun yet swanky vibe.
The Beverage Program
At The John Lamb, Mike is using ingredients like tobacco-rinsed whiskey, sweet potato syrup, and carrot juice – super fun stuff. They even have a challis that looks like the Holy Grail from Indiana Jones, serving the Sago-Tini, while the Chattanooga Choo-Choo is garnished with a tobacco leaf.
The restaurant is operated by Joseph Valentine, and features a $1.00 oyster happy hour from 4pm to 7pm and then again from 10pm to close. If you are looking for a bite to eat, they serve everything from Southern-style fried chicken and Kung Pao Calamari to a selection of sausages sourced from Schaller & Weber. They also book communal tables and serve whole animal dinners, if that’s your thing.

Ingredients: Lunazul tequila blanco, gracias a Dios Mezcal, sweet potato syrup, orange juice, carrot juice, dill, chili tincture.
Ingredients: Redemption rye, apple brandy, apple pie moonshine (house-made), Peychauds, Ricard Pastis.
The Fainter Heart
Ingredients: Cynar, Bruto Americano, Leblon cachaca infused with licorice root and activated charcoal.
