How can a Latte be a Macchiato?

So can a Latte also be a macchiato? Today, Starbucks is launching their Latte Macchiato and we are wondering how a latte can also be a macchiato? So normal lattes are created by pouring the espresso into a cup, followed by the steamed milk. The only two ingredients that are needed, according to Starbucks, is espresso and milk. In their anatomy of espresso beverages they describe the latte macchiato as Foamed whole milk marked with shots of espresso, which sounds just like a macchiato.

What’s the Difference?

The small difference is supposed to bring out a much bolder espresso taste which is then followed by the sweet and creaminess of the steamed milk. The color of this drink will also be much darker than a typical latte.

Where does the macchiato come from you ask? The macchiato is made by pouring the espresso into the glass first and then marking the espresso with a small amount of cream. Macchiato roughly translated means marked or stained or spotted, here.

The drink is thickens due to the milk having a moment to aerate and when the espresso is poured into the milk, most of the espresso sits in the middle of the cup giving the drink a layered look.

How to make the Latte Macchiato:

  1. The barista steams whole milk,
  2. which is then added to an empty glass and topped with a bit of merengue-like foam.
  3. Two shots of espresso are then poured through the milk.

So I guess that the small spot that the espresso makes on the foam technically makes this drink one part macchiato and the process and I would guess the portions of espresso to steamed milk makes the drink a latte.
