The Detroit cocktail scene just keeps heating up, this time with Second Best. Slated to open in Midtown in early summer by the same team behind Grey Ghost, Second Best will feature craft cocktails, classics and good old fun shots inspired by Jager Bombs and Kamikazes, along with a variety of beer, both local and not.
The drink to try at Second Best will no doubt be the My First Old Fashioned, a riff on the classic cocktail made with bourbon whiskey, Luxardo cherry and orange syrup, orange bitters, Angostura bitters and a splash of soda, created by partner Will Lee. Lee’s version of the Old Fashioned is a cocktail that is familiar and relatable to drinkers of all ages and generations – with some minor updates.
“This drink represents the whole idea behind the bar concept and program, taking us back to a time when we didn’t think too much about what you drink and the bar was the neighborhood hang out where everyone knew your name and what you drank, explains Lee. “My First Old Fashioned pays homage to the first iconic drink that we dive bartenders made starting out in our career.”
My First Old Fashioned Recipe
- 2 oz Bourbon Whiskey
- .75 oz Luxardo orange syrup (muddled Luxardo cherries with fresh orange juice)
- 2 dashes Angostura
- 2 dashes orange bitters
- Splash of soda
- Orange slice, for garnish
Build all ingredients an a room-temp Old Fashioned glass. Stir and garnish with Luxardo cherries and half slice orange.
