If you are looking for a great East Village spot to enjoy creative low ABV drinks and Vietnamese food, look no further than Chao Chao (which means “hello” in Vietnamese, BTW). This newly opened spot by lifelong Alphabet City resident Stephan Brezinsky – his mom was raised in Saigon so the Vietnamese cred is real – boasts a cocktail menu created by mixologist Tom Richter if Dear Irving – and formerly The John Dory and Milk & Honey – with selections made with sherry, wine, beer and sake.

Standouts include the Silver Sliver (pictured below), a kaffir sour made with blanc vermouth royale, kaffir lime, egg white and lemon, the Nah Toi, a riff on the classic Negroni but made here with sake and the Police Action with blueberry wine cordial, shochu, blueberries, lime, mint and sparkling sake.

Meanwhile, the Foreign Legion is a large format option ideal for larger groups (serves up to 4) and made with Dubonnet, house-carbonated sake, ginger, orange, lemon and Tomr’s tonic.

Beers are also available on draft or bottle, while the wine selections pair well with the bold and flavorful dishes including Taro Tots, Chicken Wings, Cauliflower Three Ways and Squid Salad.
