No Green Beer: The Top 6 St. Patrick’s Day Cocktails to Sip

Today is St. Patrick’s Day – and people all over the city will be skipping work to indulge in their favorite Irish-inspired beverages. But instead of quaffing green beer, try one of these delicious St. Patrick’s Day cocktails instead.

Irish Coffee

Most people start the St. Patty’s Day drinking early (the line at legendary East Village pub McSorley’s started at 6 a.m.!) so you might as well get some caffeine. It’s going to be a long day, and the goal here is to not pass out before lunchtime. Try one with Jameson Irish whiskey, brown sugar syrup, fresh brewed coffee and some whipped cream, blended together.

The Emerald

The Emerald cocktail

Looking for something with a bit of a kick? Go for the Emerald, a concoction of Irish whiskey, Italian vermouth and orange bitters, a riff on the Negroni. Just pace yourself – these things are strong! Garnish with a lemon or orange peel, or go naked. The Emerald tastes great either way.

Hot Toddy

Hot Toddy

Considering how cold it is outside, you might want to warm up with the Hot Toddy, a delicious mix of Powers Irish whiskey, a sugar cube, lemon peel and boiling water. Add some nutmeg for extra flavor, and enjoy.

Irish Gold

Irish Gold

This cocktail is sweet and simple, and easy to drink. Made with Irish whiskey (Tullamore Dew is a great option), ginger ale, peach schnapps and a splash of orange juice, the Irish Gold packs a punch. This sweet cocktail is a perfect drink for first-time whiskey drinkers.

Pickleback Shot

Pickleback Shot

Serious drinkers will no doubt be ordering rounds of Pickleback Shots to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Originated at hangouts in Brooklyn, the Pickleback Shot is exactly what its name suggests: a shot of Jameson Irish whiskey immediately followed by a shot of pickle juice. The woody yet sweet taste of the whiskey and the briny flavor of the pickle juice is a winning combination.

Guinness

Guinness

No St. Patrick’s Day celebration would be complete without a pint of Guinness. When poured correctly, this Irish stout has a creamy finish and a rich, nutty flavor. For a true Irish experience, try the pints at Paddy Reilly’s Music Bar in Kip’s Bay.
