It’s cold and we suddenly want to drink brown liquor. This week, we head to Bar Virage – the Israeli-influenced hangout that has been serving thirsty guests of the past 20 (!) years – for the S’Old Fashion with Old Overholt rye, silan syrup, rhubarb bitters and a fig garnish.
As an homage to Israeli cocktail culture and heritage, Bar Virage uses indigenous ingredients such as the silan syrup, a date honey found in every local Israeli market and used in the S’Old Fashion as a sub for sugar cubes traditionally found in an Old Fashioned. This riff on the classic cocktail uses different ingredients but it’s just as delicious.
S’Old Fashion at Bar Virage Recipe and Preparation
- 2.5 oz Old Overholt rye
- .5 oz silan syrup
- 4 dashes rubarb bitters
- Fig garnish
Preparation: Stirred, strained and served in a rocks glass and garnished with a fig.
