When the bar at KYU (pronounced like the letter ‘Q’), the Asian-inspired hotspot in Miami’s Wynwood Art District, announced a new cocktail menu, I had to run over and have a tasting. Added to their classic favorites, the new drinks are under cheeky categories, such as ‘Mind Blown’ and ‘Boozy A.F.’.
KYU restaurant partners, Chef Michael Lewis and General Manager Steven Haigh, practice green and sustainable methods in their food and drink creations as well as in the operation of the restaurant, such as planting trees to replace the wood used for the Japanese barbecue grill.
Here are samplings of KYU Miami’s newest drinks, with food suggestions:
Mind Blown Cocktails
Tom Kyu Gai
OMG! The cocktail, served hot in a decorative porcelain jar, is actually mind-blowing. This intoxicating take on the spicy and sour coconut milk-based Thai soup is made with Lemongrass Infused Bombay Dry Gin, Coconut Milk, Scallion Syrup, Cilantro Foam & Thai Chili Oil. So yummy!
Pelea De Gallos
Peppery and tangy, don’t fight this cocktail. Shaken with Peruvian Corn Infused Dobel Tequila, Mango Chili Shrub, Housemade Cilantro Lime Bitters, Salted Lime and Pepper Foam.
Pair these drinks with one of KYU’s signature bites, Soft Shell Crab Steamed Buns.
Boozy A.F. Cocktails
GFM
A rich and intense 50/50 cocktail made with Bombay Dry, Peach Oolong Infused Dolin Blanc and Saffron Bitters.
No Figgity No Doubt
This boozy beauty is made with parts of Bulliet Bourbnon, Amaro Montenegro and Punt e Mes (Italian vermouth), which have infused with Rosemary, then, Vanilla and Orange Zest are added. Next, the drink is garnished with a fig speared with a rosemary sprig that is set ablaze.
Match up these cocktails with one of KYU’s signature smoked dishes, Beef Short Ribs with a trio of Asian dipping sauces.
Yummy & Light Cocktails
Dao – Kiri
Fragrant and exotic; this cocktail is mixed with Botran Reserva Solera Aged Rum, Bouquet Liqueur (made with lavender, rose, hibiscus), Upcycled Citrus and Grapefruit Oleo Saccharum.
It’s Cobblering Thyme
This elegantly assertive drink is mixed with Hendricks Gin, Cream Sherry, Aperol and Cardamaro, and shaken with housemade Blueberry Lemon Thyme Jam, then, served over crushed ice.
