Whisky Live Recap: NY Distilleries You Need to Know

Earlier this month Whisky Magazine held their annual Whisky Live NY event, bringing together more than 60 of the world’s top whiskey brands. We tasted scotch, rye, bourbon and everything in between at Pier 60 on the Hudson River, while bag pipes blared in the background. Though we tasted some top whiskeys from around the world, the event gave ample space to our hometown NY distilleries, and some of the locals came out at the top of our lists!

Here are our top picks for whiskeys made right here in NYC (or a short train ride away):

Van Brunt Stillhouse American Whiskey

The Van Brunt Still House‘s line of four whiskeys are in a category all its own, with a flavor profile between rye and bourbon. You’ll pick up on floral and vanilla notes, with a hint of sweetness. www.vanbruntstillhouse.com

Hudson Whiskey Baby Bourbon

This distillery, located just outside of New Paltz, NY, boasts a line of whiskeys so robust and diverse that it was difficult to choose a favorite. Their Baby Bourbon wins by a hair, for its subtle smoky flavor and 100% locally sourced corn base. www.hudsonwhiskey.com

Widow Jane Bloody Butcher High Rye Bourbon

Widow Jane offered a line of heirloom varietal whiskeys made with unique, local grains. The organic Bloody Butcher corn in this bourbon produces the flavor of grilled sweets like peaches or s’mores. The collection also stands out for their hand-labeled bottles. www.widowjane.com
