Barrow Street Residents Group Trying to Block Gay Bar From Opening

Looks like their is some new drama brewing in the West Village. A sign posted on the door of a Bedford Street townhouse this weekend urged neighbors to block the liquor license of Christopher Street gay bar Boots & Saddle from opening a location at 37 Barrow Street.

“The applicant for a liquor license at 37 Barrow is Boots & Saddle, a bar on Christopher Street featuring adult entertainment and open from Noon to 4 am daily,” the concerned resident explains.

The letter from the Barrow Street Residents group goes on to note that the landlord of 37 Barrow has been contacted regarding the “late night” operation, and points out that the community has successfully fought nearby licenses to impose usage restrictions, at Bleecker Tavern and the now-shuttered Centro Vinoteca. Bedford Street residents also recently raised concerns about the re-opening of the historic Chumley’s Tavern at 86 Bedford, and are working to overturn the liquor license claiming that the patrons will be “unruly, drunk and extremely loud.”

The Community Board 2 meeting will be held on Thursday, May 15th at St. Anthony of Padua Church on Sullivan Street – and Boots & Saddle can definitely expect a fight from this group.
