Best Whisky in The World is from … Tasmania?

A panel of the world’s leading whiskey experts (they must have lost our invite) gathered in London to judge the 2014 World Whiskey Awards hosted by Whiskey Magazine.  These brave judges put their minds & palates together to conclude that the current 2014 Best Whisky in The World is Sullivans Cove Single Cask Malt from a small distillery in the Tasmanian Islands off Australia.

This shocking news sent ripples through the whiskey community as the top honors always go to Scotland or Japan; the two countries have dominated the World Whiskey Awards since inception in 2007.  Sullivan Cove beat out over 300 whiskies and only a mere 516 bottles were made from the award winning batch. Sullivan Cove is retailing for about $167 for for the French Oak Cask aged 11-12 years.

Sullivans Cove Director, Peter McGuire, told ABC News, “We are all very small producers, we are boutique producers and we have the luxury of being able to tweak things personally. So when we are running the still, they are not automatic systems, we actually run it from the heart if you like. So we cut our runs, manage our runs on the way it smells, flows, tastes. There is science behind it but we are not running computers that turn things on and off.”  Some notes from the judges – honey, haystacks, apple, caramel, toffee & molasses.

The SC distillery will be selling three of the last remaining bottles from the winning barrel (HH0525 … if you don’t know, now you know) so if you know anyone in Tasmania, tell them to get on it.

Scotland & Japan are now left quoting”Mean Girls” – #You CantSitWithUs”
