Eataly shuts down wine store, pays $500,000 fine

Bad news for Batali and Bastianich: Eataly’s wine store will shut down for the next six month and pay a half a million dollar fine for violating State Liquor Authority rules.

Last week, we told you that the Batali empire was in danger of losing its liquor license for breaking the rules by having interests in the manufacturing and wholesaling of wine at the 23rd Street store (Bastianich produces wine that has been sold there). Now, the Italian market’s license has been suspended, forcing it to close down until the fall.

“Eataly Vino regrets that it will close for six months, during which time we will resolve various technical requirements raised by the New York State Liquor Authority,” said a spokeswoman for Eataly.

“We are working diligently to address any concerns the Authority has and look forward to reopening in the fall,” she added.
