How to Make a Classic Margarita

Nothing makes us think of warmer weather then drinking a shaken margarita by the pool and even though it is not warm enough to hang out at the pool we can act like we are and drink this classic cocktail.

How to Make a Shaken Margarita

  • 1 Lime, cut crosswise into 5 slices
  • Coarse salt
  • 1 cup of ice cubes
  • 1/2 cup of premium tequila
  • 1/4 cup triple sec or other orange liquer
  • 2 Tbsp fresh lime juice

Place three lime slices in a single layer on small place. Pour enough slat on another small plate to reach depth of 1/4 inches. Light press rims of two Margarita glasses onto lime slices, twisting to extract juices and coat rims. Dip moistened rims into salt to coat lightly. Combine ice cubes, tequila, triple sec, and lime juice into a cocktail shaker. Shake until outside of shaker becomes frosty. Strain mixture into prepared glasses. Garnish rims with two limes. (This drink recipe makes two margaritas.)

History of the Margarita

There are a couple of different stories on the origin of the Margarita:

The first, In 1938, Carlos “Danny” Herrera, invented the margarita at the Rancho La Gloria Hotel, halfway between Tijuana and Rosarito. This story was related by Herrera and also by bartender Albert Hernandez, who is acknowledged for popularizing a Margarita in San Diego after 1947, at the La Plaza restaurant in La Jolla. Hernandez claimed the owner of La Plaza, Morris Locke, knew Herrera and visited Mexico often.

The Second, Hussong’s Cantina in Ensenada, Mexico is also reputedly the place where the Margarita was created in October, 1941 by bartender Don Carlos Orozco. He concocted a mixture of equal parts tequila, Damiana (Cointreau is used now) and lime, served over ice in a salt-rimmed glass for Margarita Henkel, daughter of the German Ambassador to Mexico..

Regardless of who created the Margarita we are happy that they did and can’t wait for it to warm up so that we can enjoy them outside!
